Scared As Such About Going To A CBSO Concert! :|

Hiya, I'm only 13, but in Year 5 (about 3/4 years ago) a man from the CBSO came in and then we did a concert at the civic hall with his help and I thought how wonderful the music would be at the CBSO concerts, as if 1 man can make children who already play instruments just not that good sound absoloutely fantastic on stage then what will the rest of the CBSO's peoples standards!!! I think that I really want to come and see it!

BUT, I'm scared what do people do? what ages? what clothes? casual formal?! Help me please!! as I honestly do not know what it'd be like! I mean I've been to Shakespeare and will the people be like that?! Also, how do you know which show to come and see!?

Thanks

aww....:p

Seriously though, you're right, the CBSO is great. People of all ages come to the concerts, although, as is the unfortunate trend with so much classical music these days, it leans towards the older generation. Normally people wear smart or smart/casual - it's really not that important though.

Honestly, I don't think you have anything to be scared about! I'm sure the orchestra would be delighted to have you come along as, the more people at a concert, the better the atmosphere. You can pick up a programme somewhere around the ICC, which tells you everything that's on. There's one for Symphony Hall in general and a seperate one for CBSO specifically I think.

Just a word of warning though - do be careful what you pick. CBSO does play a fair amount of contemporary repertoire, which isn't to everyone's tastes. And I wouldn't want you put off for life if you wandered into your first concert faced with something like an entire program of Beriot! I love contemporary music personally, but it does take some ice breaking...

Hi Lauren

You might want to have a look at the first timer's guide on our site. It's in the section headed up 'Discover Classical Music'. If you'd like some pointers on what sort of concert to pick, please drop me an email (sg@cbso.co.uk). You'll be able to buy a special student ticket for just £3.50 from 1pm on the day of the performance.

We look forward to welcoming you to a CBSO concert very soon - I'll also send this direct to your email address.
