The Pathetique concert
I thought tonights' concert was truely wonderful. I enjoyed The Voyevode and the Straus concherto. Well played Rainier Gibbons!
The Pathetique was brilliant, probably the best performance I have ever heard. I'll be listening again on BBC3, and I cant wait for the CD
Well done everyone. Lets have more like this

Indeed a wonderful concert and superb playing by Rainer and the CBSO in the Oboe Concerto.
The Pathetique Symphony was truly superb as Andris shaped and caressed the music to extract all the varied emotions that Tchaikovsky appears to have
included in this his final work which produced a memorable interpretation.
Watching and hearing the CBSO playing under Andris' inspirational conducting, with every emotion being translated by the music in this wonderful
work, was truly sublime and was compelling listening from start to finish.
For many years my favourite recording of this work has been the 1961 Mravinsky version with the Lennigrad Philharmonic and I felt that last night's
performance bore some similarity to this fine recording in both style and sound. (Andris may well disagree!).
David Fanning, a music critic, said of Mravinsky:- "The Leningrad Philharmonic play like a wild stallion, only just held in check by the willpower of
its master. Every smallest movement is placed with fierce pride; at any moment it may break into such a frenzied gallop that you hardly know whether
to feel exhilarated or terrified".
In my own very personal view Andris' control of the orchestra and the skill of his players could also be similarly described based on last night's
performance. All sections of the orchestra excelled in producing such a fine performance that I shall certainly be adding this CD, when it is
released, to my collection.
I do think Andris should, over time, record all the remaining Tchaikovsky symphonies to produce a full cycle to add to his existing recording of the
5th and now the 6th. He is such a great interpreter of Tchaikovsky and a new recorded cycle would, I hope, be well received!!
The Russian National Orchestra 1991 Pletnev recording is also a fine one but I do expect that last night's performance, recorded for Orfeo records,
may well eclipse both of these and establish itself as a new benchmark for this work.
A superb five star performance by an orchestra and conductor working in perfect harmony and at the top of their game!!
Finally a quick word of thanks to David Gregory for another of his finely researched and informative pre-concert talks, this time about the
Pathetique, his insight does make the performance even more enjoyable.
Last night's concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at 7p.m. on Friday 4th June.

I also enjoyed the Pathetique performance. However the afternoon version was marred by regular bouts of audience coughing, including right at the very
moment when you didn't want it to happen in the first movement.
I hope the CD recording can draw on both concerts, and some patching sessions. Some reassurance on this would be useful. I wouldn't want to have to
relisten to someone's throat-clearing at that crucial moment time after time.
For future reference, as well as a note in the concert programme, when a concert is being recorded for CD release would it be possible to have a
podium announcement asking for this to be respected by the audience?
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a concert in San Francisco where the adagio of Mahler's 10th was being recorded as part
of their cycle. Michael Tilson Thomas briefly, and with genial humour, drew the audience's attention to the microphones above the stage and this
helped reduce the ambient disturbances.

I'm really sorry to hear that your concert was marred by "audience participation", David, though I think this was probably anticipated by Orfeo,
and that it will not affect the final CD.
Last night's performance seemed generally free from such problems but I understand that, if necessary, Orfeo and the CBSO would re-record any
sections that couldn't be edited to ensure that the final CD version is free of any unwanted sounds.
I have attended all the evening performances, recorded by Orfeo, and purchased all the CD's released so far, David, and I have not been aware of any
unwanted sounds on the recordings.
The sound quality on the Orfeo CD's is excellent, aided by the great SH acoustics, and the performances are superb and I have no hesitation in
assuring you that the finished product will be of 1st class quality.
I was surprised that on Wednesday night, when Andris gave a pre-concert address to the audience he didn't make the point you mentioned as not
everyone buys a programme.
The presence of microphones, should be obvious to all, but might be seen to indicate only a radio broadcast and not a CD recording, so hopefully your
suggestion will be considered by the CBSO management as I know they do read the forum posts.
I'm sure that someone at CBSO, maybe Richard Bratby, may be able to confirm that this is the case but that is what I was given to understand, after
the concert, by an orchestra member.
As I've mentioned Richard here I should take this opportunity to say thanks to him for his excellent programme notes for the Oboe Concerto!
