The Alpine Symphony - to be recorded?
I understand that The Alpine Symphony concert(s) may be recorded, for future CD release. I hope that this information is correct!
Interesting to see that the CBSO are playing this work on 3 consecutive nights - 28th at S.H., 29th in Hanley, 30th in Leeds Town Hall then a brief
rest before Symphony Hall again on 2nd February! This orchestra really do earn their wages :-)
If Andris gets a performance to his usual Strauss standard this will be a superb CD!
There are many CD versions already but I'm hoping this one will become a star choice for years to come if the recording story is true.

Hi Patrick
I agree, be great if they do record it. Their latest CD with Andris (Strauss, Ein Heldenleben and Der Rosenkavalier) is absolutely gorgeous! Look
forward to more Tchaikovsky with Andris too
And yep, they do work hard!
Let's hope for a great concert tomorrow night

Hi Azurite
I'm going on 2nd February, not tonight, so you can give me a preview. I have now been reliably informed by CBSO staff that they are recording both SH
performances of The Alpine, plus rehearsals. You will no doubt see microphones all over the place tonight!
I noticed, since my post, that they are NOT playing The Alpine at Hanley. It is an error on the website concerts list. They are doing the Mozart with
Dvorak's 8th. I did wonder where they would find enough space on stage at Hanley for The Alpine :-). Enjoy the concert tonight!!

Hi Patrick,
Well they did quite a good job of it Mozart nice. Actually, they played their socks off in the Strauss! I last heard it live a
year ago, when the National Youth Orchestra played it- which was vibrant and full of energy, this, (as you may perhaps expect) was all that and then
some, and a whole other level. Gave me goosebumps at Sunrise and then often throughout... could have done with a duvet to hide under in the thunder
storm didn't want it to end though
The extra brass and cow bell were off stage, up to the right, but very clearly audible. Laurence and Zoe great, Ulrich too, Rainer fab, Alan (I
think?- trumpet) awesome, Alistair perfect... you get the idea- wonderful team effort, the strings were really powerful, other sections great... that
wind machine playing looks exhausting but was done with much enthusiasm!
I do hope you enjoy it, think it will make a fine recording.
Had a nice little chat from Andris about milking cows and the simple pleasures in life, so lovely to be sort of "invited in" with his little intros

Have fun on the 2nd- cripes February almost here already..

Thanks for the review, Azurite, glad you enjoyed the concert. I am really looking forward to my turn on Tuesday night!
Glad there wasn't too much "offstage" music after the Tallis work experiment!
Those wind machines are really hard work I expect that after the third performance on Tuesday someone's arms will be aching :-)
I assume that it was being recorded from your comments?

Hi Patrick
Oh yes, microphones hanging (and stood) all about, and says in the programme that it was being "recorded live by Orfeo for future CD release" -
Hurrah
Oh and on Tuesday- when you're there- it's being recorded to be broadcast by Radio 3 on 11th February at 7pm... so go easy on the coughing
Enjoy your Tuesday night out

Cough sweets at the ready :-)
Funnily enough at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales concerts they always had a basket of free boiled sweets for audience members at the information
desk to inhibit coughing! (We lived in S. Wales for a decade or so).
Maybe the CBSO should do the same when recording? I always take my own - just in case! CBSO at Hanley tonight withe the same Mozart plus Dvorak's 8th
(no Alpine!) could have gone but am saving my energy for Tuesday :-)

Hi Azurite
Safely back from my Alpine journey, glad I took your advice about the weather as the thundertsorms were very scary, another great performance tonight
so hopefully ORFEO have enough material for their CD :-)
I didn't cough once, sadly some others did in the quiet section "Calm before the Storm", hopefully it will not effect the CD.
Andris again gave his "cow story" beforehand! A pretty full house tonight and the audience seemed to approve of the performance!!! Andris cleverly
held his conducting posture, after the end of the piece, to give time for the CD guys to stop recording before any applause!
I only wish I had also gone last Thursday too!!!!!!! Look forward to the CD release and I echo your comments about the solo playing. The whole
orchestra were superb and didn't seem jaded giving this third performance in 6 days.
I'm really pleased that the CBSO's decision to play this work, given the costs involved, proved to have been rewarded by good audience numbers.

Hi Patrick
Pleased to hear you enjoyed it too- and made it safely home through the thunder storms Between the concerts and the rehearsals imagine Orfeo will create a fine CD from the most excellent work of the CBSO. Hopefully they'll
have the quiet bits without coughing...!
I think when the CBSO was sponsored by Tunes (?) they had cough/throat/cold sweets on the CBSO desk free prior to a concert- quite handy! Like you, I
take my own these days.
On the Rosenkavalier, Ein Heldenleben CD there is a loud applause at the end which really jerks you out of the wondrous world the music has taken you
to. (Fantastic CD though, Laurence's playing especially) Perhaps the Alpine CD will at least have a longer pause before clapping erupts, thanks to
Andris' pose then?
So, what's next for you? Liadov, Shostakovich, Stravinksy - with Andris again, for me....

Hi Azurite
I would be surprised if Orfeo hadn't ask Andris to "hold the applause" so they could ensure the CD was audience/applause free! Though I love live
concert recordings, as they often have more vitality than studio recordings, the audience noise and applause can spoil the listening experience.
My next concert is indeed Liadov etc on Saturday night!
I went to the Proms last summer and The Firebird was really stunning so I'm looking forward to hearing it again this time with the superior SH
acoustics :-)
The offstage brass ensemble in The Alpine were, as you said, very audible unlike the offfstage strings in the VW Tallis work.
The CBSO players must be very fit, not to mention dedicated, as after last weeks intensive programme of concerts this week has been just as demanding!
Just hope Simon Webb, the orchestra manager, reads this to pass on to all the orchestra that we do understand how hard they work and we really
appreciate all their efforts :-)
Also looking forward to Rattle's Bach but that's probably destined for a new forum post!
Hope you enjoy Saturday!

Hi Patrick,
I wonder if Orfeo did ask Andris to hold the applause or if he just chose to hold everyone in that moment a while longer, for he does it when they're
not recording too. Mind you, all too often someone starts clapping regardless of what the conductor is doing I like to just contemplate the moment for a bit though... I quite like applause on a CD, but it is nice to have a
good gap between end of music and when clapping begins, it was a bit of a surprise on the Strauss CD, bit of a rude awakening from such a gorgeous
musical reverie. You're right that sometimes the audience noise can spoil the listening to certain recordings, but they seem to have sorted it
pretty well for the two released so far, so here's hoping the same is true for the Alpine Symphony.
Are they recording the (or have recorded?) the Firebird for release sometime too? I went to the concert at Symphony Hall last summer when they played
it (not the Proms sadly), so am, like you, looking forward to it again, because loved it then. Also, Andris and Baiba Skride seem to have a great
friendly chemistry so I'm looking forward to the Shostakovich too
The orchestra's hard work is very much appreciated, and hope they do indeed know it.
Gosh, it's not long until Rattle's Bach is it.. look forward to your post on that in March then
Hope you enjoy tomorrow too

nice
Super playing from both in the Firebird. Margaret with Greta, our guest principal Bassoon. First here is Andris with a can of interestingly named
energy drink, I wonder where he got that from. Ten minutes later we were in Dusseldorf, I never realised they were so close to one another.
Interestingly we returned briefly to Cologne, where we arrived, stopped for a few minutes and then went out backwards.
